When do baby teeth come out?

Short answer

Most babies start getting teeth between 6 and 12 months. All 20 baby teeth are usually in by age 3.

Simple explanation

Baby teeth (also called milk teeth) come in a rough order: lower front teeth first, then upper front teeth, then side and back teeth. Every child is different — a few months earlier or later is normal.

When this usually matters

Knowing the timing helps you tell teething from other problems.

When to seek dental help

If a child has no teeth by 18 months, or if new teeth look very different from normal, ask a dentist.

Questions to ask your dentist

  • Is my child on track for their age?
  • When should the first dental visit be?
  • What can I do at home for teething?

This is simple educational information. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace a dental examination. Your dentist may recommend something different depending on your mouth, X-rays, pain, infection, gums, bone, medical history, and clinical judgment.
