Myth: whitening ruins your enamel

Short answer

Professionally dosed peroxide whitening does not damage enamel. Sensitivity is common but temporary.

Simple explanation

The active ingredient in almost all whitening — carbamide or hydrogen peroxide — works by oxidizing stain molecules inside the tooth. At the concentrations and contact times used in supervised dental whitening, published studies do not show meaningful loss of enamel mineral structure. What people feel is short-term sensitivity to cold, because peroxide temporarily increases fluid movement in enamel tubules. It settles within days of finishing treatment. Real risks come from misuse: leaving trays on too long, DIY acidic mixes, abrasive charcoal pastes, or whitening over untreated cavities or exposed roots — those situations can cause damage.

When this usually matters

Existing crowns, veneers and fillings do not whiten, so an already-restored smile may look uneven after bleaching.
